Babolat's lightweight, fast-handling tier
Air is Babolat's speed tier, and it works on a clear premise: keep the weight down, keep the hands fast. The Viper, Veron, Vertuo, and Origin all sit under this umbrella, each tuned around a weight band that lets players reach balls that come back hard through the glass and recover quickly at the net after a bandeja that didn't quite close the point. These are frames for attacking players who close the net aggressively, finish points overhead, and need a racket that responds without lag. Construction of points from deep in the back-court is possible, but it is not what the Air family is built for.
The Air Viper has been the consistent star of this tier across three generations. Our score for the debut 2022 model was PRR 85, which was already a strong result: diamond intent at a weight most intermediates can swing deep into a match without fatigue. The 2025 Air Viper 2.5 stepped that up to PRR 87 as Babolat sharpened the feel and overhead output, while the Veron and Vertuo trims joined it at different balance and budget points. The 2026 Air Viper 2.6 reaches PRR 88 in our scoring, placing it squarely in flagship-adjacent territory despite swinging lighter than most power-first frames. That three-point climb across four years is real development, not a cosmetic update.
What separates the Air range from Babolat's Technical and Counter tiers is not just a number on the spec sheet. The whole family is optimised around one playing condition: being fast enough to win exchanges at the net where the ball is moving quickly and margins are small. Heavier Babolat frames generate more raw overhead pace, and they hit harder when you get full contact. But the Air Viper loads up genuine finishing pace for its class and stays composed under pressure in a way that heavier frames sometimes don't when your hands are tired late in a match. Which one should you buy?
The 2026 Air Viper 2.6 is the buy at full price. At PRR 88 it carries the strongest score in the series by a clear margin, and we have not found another lightweight racket in Babolat's range that performs as well overhead. If the 2025 Air Viper 2.5 (PRR 87) comes up at a meaningful discount, it is worth serious consideration; the one-point gap in our scoring reflects real improvements in the newer generation, but 20% or more off the 2026 price closes the gap considerably. Skip the 2022 Air Viper (PRR 85) outright. It was a solid racket in its time, but the current generation is better across every area that matters, and the older model is rarely cheap enough now to justify choosing it over the 2026 version.
Within the rest of the tier, the Air Veron (PRR 81-82) suits all-court players who want the speed of this family without the Viper's more committed overhead focus. Vertuo and Origin cover more accessible price points and work well as a first step into the Air range, though we would save up for the Viper if finishing points overhead is a priority for your game. One comparison worth making before you commit: if you play a physical style with full overhead contact and your back-court game is strong, the Technical Viper hits harder and may be the better fit. The Air Viper trades some of that raw ceiling for consistent speed that holds up across a full doubles match.
